Happy Birthday to my little middle Sister!
It is her sweet 16 so I thought a whimsical gold cake would fit the occasion.
I made the feathers with fondant and the rest of the cake is buttercream.
The inside is made of vanilla cake layers(using my vanilla cupcake recipe) filled with a fresh strawberry cream cheese buttercream. Try this recipe if you want to make something similar. It doesn’t have cream cheese, but you could always add a little!
I have to say, I am really loving the gold and white trend lately. I’m starting to think everything might be better with a little gold added!
Love, this cake is amazing, I’m excited I’ll get to try it when I get home. You’re so dang talented, Sweetheart!

I would love to see a post about how to stack a cake like that! I can do a three-layer cake, but would love to learn how to do the different sizes!
Emily, you got it! I will try to get a post up on stacking multi-tier cakes sometime in the next month.
Holy crapola! This is one phenomenal looking cake!! And ditto Emily–now gotta go search your blog to see if you already posted your tutorial 🙂 Oh my gosh if I could make people cakes like these…well, I would never get any real work done and I would just open my own bakery! Utterly beautiful 🙂
Haha, your comment made me laugh! But Thank you! I haven’t posted a tutorial yet but I really need to get on that!
What a gorgeous cake. Do you make your own fondant? I read somewhere that Wilton reformulated theirs so (to be fair!) I haven’t tried that, but so far I have found fondant to be somewhat leaving something to be desired taste-wise. This cake blogger makes her own: http://cakewhiz.com/cakewhiz/post/How-to-make-marshmallow-fondant.aspx ; but I haven’t done that either.
Thank you Margot! I make my own marshmallow fondant. I’m not a big fan of commercial fondant, taste wise. Marshmallow fondant is much better tasting(though I still prefer buttercream) and is quite easy to make. You should give it a try! It’s much more cost effective, as well =)
Is the recipe for this cake posted anywhere that I can look up? It looks so deliciously moist! I’m dying! Thank you
Sorry Carol! It’s not =(. I really need to post it because it’s one of my favorites! I’ll get on that 😉
How did you make the gold ombre buttercream frosting?
Hi Tiffani!
I used a gold food color spray and sprayed heavily on the bottom getting lighter as I went up.
I can’t find the recipe for the Gold Ombre Feather Birthday Cake – It looks fabulous. Where do I find the recipe for the cake and the frosting?
Hi Judy! Unfortunately there is not a recipe for this particular cake. It was more of a post for inspiration rather than a recipe post.
