Lavender & Vanilla Milk Hot Chocolate

Lavender & Vanilla Milk Hot Chocolate

December 13, 2016 by Kayley 15 Comments

I have a problem with crowded places. Crowds in general, I guess. Being smooshed together with dozens of strangers(or familiar peeps, for that matter)in any place and situation is pretty much my worst nightmare. As if being a anti-social introvert ...

London Fog Hot Chocolate + Mapled Whipped Cream

London Fog Hot Chocolate + Mapled Whipped Cream

October 13, 2016 by Kayley 34 Comments

Is it too early to start making hot chocolate? I don't know. The sunny afternoons full of warmly colored leaves and temperatures reaching for 70 tell me yes. But as I sit here looking out at a now gloomily gray sky, shivering a bit even in my thick ...

*This Pineapple Ginger Iced Tea is free of refined sugars and is a refreshing way to give your body an icy dose of anti-inflammatory benefits. Over the years my family has consumed our fair share of fresh pineapple. It's readily available in our ...

Raspberry Rhubarb & Rose Shrubs

Raspberry Rhubarb & Rose Shrubs

May 18, 2016 by Kayley 11 Comments

As someone with a huge obsession with lemonade, I was more than thrilled  to recently discover shrubs. I don't drink alcohol, but I love myself a good, icy drink full of fruity flavors and a little tang. I don't care for overly sweet drinks, but as I ...

Coconut Horchata

Coconut Horchata

May 4, 2015 by Kayley 7 Comments

To be honest, I've never really cared for Horchata. I've wanted to like it. Really. But every glass I've ever had has just tasted a bit like milk with a lot of sugar added to it. Not my cup of tea. Or Horchata. ...

WINTER LEMONADE: Cranberry Blood Orange

WINTER LEMONADE: Cranberry Blood Orange

February 4, 2015 by Kayley 14 Comments

Isn't it a shame that there are so many flavors we miss out on in the summer? Well, I guess you wouldn't really feel like hazelnut hot chocolate in July(or maybe you would?), but I'm talking more in the realm of citrus. Because what else would I talk ...

  • I think I had better scoop up some blood oranges before they’re gone for the year so I can make another ruffled whole orange cake - I know I’ll be missing those deep red beauties in a few months!
.
Also a reminder - the discount code for 10% off of preset bundles expires tomorrow night! Use code INSTAGRAM10 if you’re looking to give your food a little mood 😘. Link in profile.

  • Oh, how I wish I was home with my babies, stuffing our faces with Tahini Mousse Cake and snuggling in front of the fire.
.
As it currently stands, I’m in the passenger seat of a little car going 10 miles an hour through an icy blizzard in the middle of one of Utah’s more treacherous canyons.
.
It will be worth it, I hope, as a quick little getaway to the big city was in order for Dev and I. But this SNOW, you guys!!! Where is the mercy?!
.
SLC friends, where are your favorite places to eat? I know, I live relatively close but we’re always looking for really great new places.

  • Happy Valentines Day, lovelies!
.
I like the way one of my son’s little cards put it: “they call it Valentine’s day, I call it Thursday”. (Angry cat).
.
So, happy Thursday, if that’s where you’re at. This year I stand with angry cat.
.
Just kidding. I don’t really care either way, I just saw the opportunity for a sweet rhyme.
  • ***Holy moly, you guys. I am super super duper excited to tell you that The Kitchen McCabe Lightroom Preset Collection is finally here!! 🎉 .
You guys have been asking for years and I’m so happy that I can FINALLY say “yes!” Instead of “maybe at some point in the future when I have time”, because we all know that that’s not actually a thing. 😂
.
I’ve packaged up my presets by season along with one big, bad, all inclusive option so that no matter the time of year, no matter the light situation, there are presets that will work for you and your photographs.

  • Every year, @KingArthurFlour chooses one stand out recipe to feature and they have deemed 2019 as the year of the Classic Birthday Cake! I can’t even tell you how excited I was to make this from-scratch yellow cake all covered in rich chocolate buttercream. It is miles above the boxed mix version that I grew up on.
.
Head to the blog to get the recipe!

I am DONE with winter. .
NOT feeling super into groundhogs right now, and to add insult to injury: snow is forecasted for the next 9 days.
.
I know , I know. Snow is good because it builds up the mountain packs and provides us with the fresh water we need to get through the warm months.
Yeah.
I get it.
But in the interest of self preservation, I’d also like to avoid what will likely be a return to the oceanic proportions of lake Bonneville circa 18,000 bc when it all starts to melt.
No really. I live in the river bottoms and this is a legit concern.
I’m ready to feel warm sunshine on my face again instead of the daily kiss of frostbite.
.
I’m using citrus so often this winter because it really is the only thing pulling me through.
If it weren’t for citrus I’d head into a closet with a blanket, space heater, 2 months worth of cake, and sleep (except for cake breaks) until all that white goes away.
.
So bless you, dear citrus. You’ve given my children a mother this frozen, frigid season.

  • I think I’ve used citrus more this year than any other before. Right now I’m reeeally into Sumo Tangerines. I’m buying them constantly and really savoring them because they’ll be gone in a flash. 2 weeks out of the year is not enough for Sumo’s, folks. It’s just not.
.
At least I can source oranges at any time, and kumquats most of the time. That means this is Candied Orange Olive Oil Cake + Cornmeal & Rum is getting made all year long 🙌🏻

  • How weird is it that this is one of my favorite shots that I’ve ever taken?
.
For one, I HATE bananas. Like, absolutely detest those yellow-peeled, slimy-fleshed suckers. On their own anyway. I do have a penchant for banana bread. And banana cake (obvs).
.
For two, where IS the cake? Or the pie? The elaborate mound of meringue and berries? The simplicity of this photo is undeniable. But I think that’s why I like it. There’s something in the un-fussiness of a bowl of bananas sitting on a beat up wood table in the late afternoon light that makes me feel calm, comfortable, and at home. Grounded by the reality given from the oxidized nicks in their sides. Maybe it’s also the air of possibility. How many different things could those humble bananas be transformed into?
.

What kind of imagery makes you feel that way? Like you could settle in and make yourself comfortable for awhile...

  • This Clementine Curd Pavlova is new on the blog tonight!
.
@cocoebaunilha made the most beautiful cake topped with peeled clementines and I’ve been dying to use the same garnish ever since. I’ll never ever get over how beautiful a simple piece of fruit is.
.
Also, it’s down to that time of year when the produce selection at the market is dwindling. But it seems like clementines are always there to spruce the fruit bins up 🍊 .
