I have been dying to try Air Frying. I’ve heard about it for awhile and am so excited that I finally got a chance to give it a go and see what the fuss was all about! Power AirFryer Oven sent me one of their multi-cookers to try and I’ve been having a great time frying all of my favorites. I don’t deep fry often as it’s a bit of a hassle and I don’t love drenching my food in oil to cook it. Air Frying is nice because you can cook food quickly at a high heat using hot air and get a somewhat similar result to deep frying. I’ve loved making fries using russet potatoes – they turn out delicious. Soft on the inside, crisp on the outside. The airfryer can cook in a multiple of different styles, like rotisserie, it can bake things, it can even dehydrate. It’s like a portable oven which is nice, especially if you tend to run out of oven space like I do.
I thought it would be fun to try making apple fries in the air fryer. The key to great apple fries in this machine is to cook them at a high heat for a short amount of time, so that the outside gets that fried sheen and texture but the inside stays slightly firm and holds it’s shape. I tossed the fried apples in a little cinnamon sugar and then made a quick and easy custard for dipping. It’s like an easy, disassembled apple pie! Note that you will still need to add a little bit of oil to your apples when cooking. I toss them with a bit of avocado oil(any neutral flavored oil will work) after slicing them, and then a bit of flour to help soak up moisture.
Make sure to choose a firm apple for cooking, so it will hold it’s shape in the fryer. Granny smith are great choices, as well as honeycrisp which I love for their sweet/sour crispness.
Happy Frying!
- FOR THE APPLE FRIES:
- 4 HoneyCrisp Apples, peeled
- ½ tablespoon Coconut Oil, liquified
- ¼ cup Raw Cane Sugar
- 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
- FOR THE COCONUT CUSTARD:
- 1 Egg
- 4 Egg Yolks
- 2 tablespoons Raw Cane Sugar
- ⅓ cup Coconut Milk(canned, full fat)
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla
- FOR THE APPLE FRIES:
- Slice the apples into medium/thin wedges(about 20 per apple).
- Place apple slices in a bowl and toss them with the coconut oil until coated.
- Turn on the air fryer and press the "fry" icon. Set the timer to twenty minutes.
- Place the apples in the rotisserie basket and shut the lid.
- Once the airfryer has been running for 3 minutes, carefully insert the rotisserie basket into the machine. Turn on the rotisserie feature so that the basket continually turns.
- Let cook for the remaining 17 minutes. Make the custard while the apples cook.
- Very carefully remove the rotisserie basket with the basket removal tool and using oven mitts, open the basket and shake the apple fries into a bowl.
- Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar over the apples and toss to coat.
- Dip in the coconut custard and enjoy!
- FOR THE COCONUT CUSTARD:
- In a small saucepan, whisk together the egg, egg yolks, sugar, and coconut milk. Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the mixture just comes to a boil. Remove the pan from the heat and continue to whisk non-stop for another minute - this will keep the custard from curdling and let it cool a bit. Whisk in the vanilla.
- Pour the custard into a bowl and serve with the apple fries. Store in an airtight container in the fridge.

oh man oh man, this looks subbbbbliiiiimmeee!!!!! I’d love to try the air fryer. I’ve heard about it many years ago but never really wanted an extra equipment that I wasn’t too sure about. Hmmm having second thoughts.
